TVS MOTOR posts 100% increase in profit; revenue growth of 7%

Despite the challenges of the global economic slowdown, TVS Motor Company continued to post consecutive growth in first three months of the current financial year 2009 - 10. The company recorded a growth of 7% in the first quarter registering revenues of Rs. 988.70 crore for the quarter ended June 2009 compared to Rs. 924.45 crore recorded during corresponding quarter in the previous year. The company's PBT recorded a 100% increase during the quarter under review with figures for Profit before tax (PBT) and Profit after tax (PAT) at Rs. 20.04 crore and Rs. 18.12 crore respectively as against Rs.10.02 crore and Rs. 7.02 crore recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The total two-wheeler sales in the first quarter of the current fiscal stood at 350,273 units compared to 343,530 units in the corresponding period of the previous financial year thereby registering a growth of 2 per cent. Motorcycles sales stood at 154,687 units during the first quarter in comparison to 171,703 units over the previous period. Scooters' sales grew 3% registering sales of 67,568 units against 65,545 units during the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Three wheeler sales tripled to 2223 units in comparison to 765 units in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Exports however, were affected in the first quarter of the current fiscal and registered lower sales of 32,067 two wheeler units in comparison to 42,214 units recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The company streamlined its motorcycles portfolio in the first quarter with the launch of TVS Apache RTR 180 in the premium segment and the 2009 model TVS Flame SR 125 in the executive segment. Developed with AVL Austria, the TVS Flame SR 125 is propelled by a three valve engine that is tuned to the ideal tumble-swirl port combination such that city riding on this machine is really smooth and comfortable. The engine's hi-tumble reduces the need for constant gear shifting while the swirl port returns optimum mileage. The TVS Flame SR 125 is equipped with an electric start and has a top speed of 95 kmph backed by 7.7kw @ 7500 rpm (10.5 bhp @ 7500 rpm).

The TVS Apache RTR 180 is an innovative blend of revolutionary technology and sporty design with an oversquare engine that is programmed to whip up an astonishing 17.3 PS making it one of the most powerful bikes in its class on Indian roads. The oversquare engine makes the bike more reliable, wears less and can be run at a higher speed. The bike has a top speed of 125kph reaching 0 to 60kmph in just 4.15 seconds. Stylish alloys, unique grab rails, chiseled fuel tank, front and rear petal disc brakes seamlessly integrate to make the Apache RTR 180 a spectacular and trendy motorcycle. Both the products have received encouraging response in the market and are expected to contribute substantially to their respective segments.
