While riding on Indian roads, a powerful horn is a must. This is because a powerful horn will alert other road users to your presence, serving as an early warning system. If other roads users are aware of your presence, safety is enhanced by a large margin. While a powerful horn that confirms to the decibel rating prescribed by the Motor Vehicles Act is essential, some bikers get overzealous and get air horns fitted on their motorcycles. And air horns are downright dangerous, which is exactly why they're illegal. Let us explain.
While a regular motorcycle horn that's reasonably powerful would produce about 80-90 decibels of sound, an air horn would produce anywhere between 120-200 decibels of sound. What this much sound does is:
1. It startles other road users, and could even lead to accidents because of the sudden shock that other road users experience while confronted with such a loud horn.
2. Causes noise pollution in our already loud cities, leading to health issues for other road users. 3. Proves to be a nuisance to many categories of people including those who are sick.
The above reasons are why law enforcement authorities in India have banned air horns for light traffic. Those found in violation of this are liable to be fined heavily, and in some cases, vehicles can even be seized. So, when you go horn shopping for your motorcycle, make sure you stay clear of air horns.
We will be back with exciting events after COVID-19.
